”Colour is black and white put together.” ~Unknown
For this challenge, Sally Russick of Studio Sublime challenged us to create a piece of jewelry using only black and white. The objective of the challenge was simple (ha! seemed simple). Participants were also able to use base metal colors or crystals as accents.
So I have had some black and white buttons sitting on my table for oh so very long just looking at me. So I said OK! I played with them for ever so long and just couldn't get them to behave on wire. So I found some ribbon and that seemed to do the trick! I have incorporated some black chain and closures. I think it still needs something, but I am going to let it sit a bit and come back to it. Maybe it will tell me. But in the meantime, this is what I came up with.
My camera is not behaving....I think it is time to branch out to a new one.
The cameo in the middle is a button. The more I look at it the more I think I want something more around it....
I used white ribbon to connect the buttons to the chain. The small beads are just black and white beads that I had in my stash....
You would think it would have been a snap to make but it really took me to my limit.
I think I need to some more tweaking. But for now it will hang over my desk til I am ready to get back to it.
For more wonderful inspirations hop on over to Sally's Page and see what the rest of us made.
Thanks for looking!
I love the soft of the ribbon contrasted with the structured wire/metal. It mirrors the start contrast between the black & white. Then the soft cameo dances romantically as the pendant. Pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dawn. I think when we design pieces, we the designers see the "mistakes" while those who are just looking see the beauty!
DeleteI don't know Vera, I'm thinking this is really nice the way it is!! I love the cameo button w/the ribbon. It really stands out and all black and white jewelry just seems to look so striking, doesn't it? I think it's perfect. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Shel. Like I said to Dawn, sometimes we designers are to close to the piece to see the true beauty!
DeleteVera, I don't think it is missing anything. I love the mix of ribbon with the wire and the cameo is perfect to pull the whole design together! I think your piece is beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for participating in the challenge!!
Thanks Sally. This challenge made me really go through my stash. I have had these buttons and cameo sitting around staring at me for a very long time. Thanks for making me finish them!
DeleteI love that the cameo is a button!!! I think your design is perfect just as is!
ReplyDeleteVery clever use of materials with the ribbon connectors, Miss Vera. I see what you mean about adding something to the pendant... What about a steel wire frame around it? That would set it apart and bring in the round shape of those cool donuts. Just a thought. Love the piece! It is fun to challenge yourself, even if it doesn't turn out the way you thought and you can come back later, right? Enjoy the day. Erin
ReplyDeleteHave you handsewn the ribbon connectors? I really like the chain part... I think it will look great when you (?) wear it!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you've connected all your components in this piece. It has such charm, and can be worn with anything, from a summer sweater and jeans to a little black dress. I never would have thought of a cameo focal, but it is PERFECT!
ReplyDeleteI love the delicacy and gracefulness in this piece. You made something very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove the original treatment you applied to your components, Vera... yes, sometimes we can come back to a piece and make little adjustments; other times the design is just perfect and we aren't ready to admit it! This is a winner IMHO!
ReplyDeleteHi Vera,
ReplyDeleteI think your necklace is beautiful and in my opinion does not need anything more. I really like the touch of adding the Cameo with the black ribbon it gives the necklace a sense of elegance.

Ribbon was a great choice, it really sets the buttons off. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteIt is great just the way it is, and I love the fact that they called to you from your desk to get them used.
ReplyDeleteI love the black and white cameo with the ribbon! It's even more fun to know it is a button.
ReplyDeleteVera, Your use of ribbon is ingenious. You have pulled together a really interesting variety of components in a fresh design. Love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE how you have used ribbon here, especially the white one, is it stitched or glued. Too cute.
ReplyDeleteAm thinking about what else you could do around the cameo..now that you mention it, it could use some more adornment around it. Definitely something that uses ribbon!
It's beautiful! I love the ribbon and the beautiful cameo!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful piece, Love it!!
